Deborah Hanson-Conant Intermission Interview

27 01 2013

Tonight I was invited by my friend +Deborah Henson-Conant to attend her concert and to share some content from her performance. It was an amazing show. Even with some early technical difficulties Deborah was able to keep the audience entertained with her comedian story telling skills. During the intermission Deborah asked me back stage for an impromptu interview along with +Adam Zand and Jared. Here’s a clip from Deborah back stage.

Below is how you see more detail about Deborah from her web site (noted at the bottom of this post).

Please enjoy!Deborah Henson-Conant (“DHC”) is a GRAMMY©-Nominated one-woman orchestra. With electric harp, voice and a looper pedal that she layers sounds in real time, then weaves solo lines and vocals above it.

Her signature instrument is an 11lb carbon-fiber electric harp, designed specifically for her by the CAMAC Harp Company in France, it’s now one of the fastest-selling new harp models in the world and carries her name, the “DHC Light.”

Forget the demure harpist — forget the Classical Music — forget dozing off in the back row. Henson-Conant is a showman, entertainer and solid musician who’s been compared to musical greats from Leonard Bernstein to Elvis Presley.

Her voice is compared to Carly Simon and Joan Baez; her playing to Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix; and her humor to musical comedian Victor Borge and even Eddie Izzard.

Her shows, her life, her instrument, her workshops and her music are all about transformation — all tied together by powerful, funny, affirming stories and universal humor.

Legendary “Tonight Show” trumpeter Doc Severinsen calls her the “Wild Woman of the Harp,” iconic rock guitarist Steve Vai says she’s the “Jimi Hendrix of the Harp.” See her once and you’ll never look at a harp the same way again.

She’s toured with the Boston Pops, opened for Ray Charles at Tanglewood, jammed onstage with Bobby McFerrin and offstage with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. She’s been featured on television shows from Charlie Rose to Joan Rivers and “The View” and in two full-length PBS music specials.

WaterFire Providence, RI July 31, 2010

1 08 2010

WaterFire Providence, the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance. WaterFire’…s one hundred sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of over ten million visitors, bringing life to downtown, and revitalizing Rhode Island’s capital city. [http://www.waterfire.org/]

Cited by the [Providence Journal] in 1997 as “the most popular work of art created in the capital city’s 371-year history” and by Friedrich St. Florian as the “crown jewel of the Providence renaissance,” WaterFire continues to grow and gain in popularity. Barnaby Evans created First Fire in 1994 as a commission to celebrate the tenth anniversary of First Night Providence. In June 1996, Evans created Second Fire for the International Sculpture Conference where it became the gathering place for thousands of participants from all over the world. Ardent art supporters convinced Evans to create an on-going fire installation and started a grass-roots effort to establish WaterFire as a non-profit arts organization. With the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, a hard working staff, generous donations from visitors, contributions from corporate leaders, and support from the City and State, WaterFire’s bright flames now regularly return to illuminate downtown Providence. Some of the thousands of lookers called this night “magical” as The Philharmonic on Fire! The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra played LIVE as the the volunteers took their place in boats and lit the fires on the water.
