What A Weekend – Emmy Awards Oct. 2013

9 10 2013

WOW, what a weekend. I woke up early Friday morning and headed to the airport with my head filled with a lot of excitement and appreciation. Not all for where I was going and who I was going to meet, but reminiscing and reflecting what we have done over the past 15 or so months.

It’s about our disabled friends, civilians and veterans alike. For some of our friends who are bedridden, wheelchair-bound, or for some that have disabilities that cannot be seen by looking at them, we are very proud to know and to have a part in their lives. For some stuck in the house, or confined to a hospital bed, looking out of the same window day after day can be a challenge.

What we are able to do is to open a window to the world for them, to give them what we thought was a break from their day. What we didn’t realize at that time is that the effects of opening that window was more significant that we originally realized. It’s real! It’s a memory! It’s a few moments in time! It’s an interactive Virtual Photo Walk.

With the help of our volunteer photographers from around the world and the Google+ platform, we are able to open that window and show our veterans their World War II Memorial in Washington DC.

We can show them the changing of the guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

We can take them aboard and on deck in front of the 9 inch guns on the USS Alabama,

We can take them to see The Pearl Harbor Memorial.

We can even take them back to the beaches of Normandy where they landed over 70 years ago.

Some of our veterans have told us that they have not stopped thinking about that beach, even after all that time, They thanked us for bringing them back to a beautiful place with turquoise water that once was once such a nightmare for each of them with the waters running red onto the beaches. As emotional as visiting this place is to revisit, it was a bittersweet closure for at least some of our friends.

We were able to bring our friends on a Hero Tour of the 911 Memorial in New York City.
We Will Never Forget.

Not all of our virtual photo walks are as emotional as the stories mentioned above.  Sometimes it’s a lot of fun, for instance swimming with turtles in Hawaii.

We also have enjoyed visiting elephants in Africa.

We’ve visited a national park sunset with our photographers as they set up for an amazing shot.

We have fulfilled dreams to visit places previously out of their reach, like iconic landmarks in Rome. Monica told me after this particular photo walk that this was on her bucket list of places to visit.  This was unfortunately impossible otherwise due to her disabilities. It could be life-threatening for her for her to fly. Monica also asked me if I knew what we just did? You took me to Rome she said.

Virtual Photo Walks (VPW) and Veterans United (VU) have been able to do this all online in a “Google+ Hangout” (a live interactive video chat room).  Many of us have never meet in real life, they all agree that this interactive video chat is more real than they could have imagined. Real relationships are made, emotional bonds are created and real friendships are nurtured, right here on Google + with VPW and VU.

This brings me to this past weekend in October 2013. I am very proud to say that the founders, team members and volunteers of Virtual Photo Walks and Veterans United were nominated for an EMMY Award in the category for Community Service.

Thank you to our friend Brenda for transporting and showing us around St. Louis on our first day in town. It was great to meet you in real life.

The weekend started on Friday night with a VIP cocktail party at Robust Wine Bar where John and I meet a few of the other Emmy nominees and people involved with the production.

Hello to this years Emmy Host, Margaret Judson of HBO’s hit show “NEWSROOM”. We had a great time together.

I also had the opportunity to meet Angie Weidinger Mid-America Emmy’s, President, Sponsorship Committee Chair/Executive Finance Committee among many others.

On Saturday John and I meet Sarah Hill in real life.

Here’s a video clip when Sarah and I meet in real life for the first time.

Sarah even taught me Google Glass. I could get use to that!
Thank you Sarah.

We all met in St. Louis in real life for the first time to share not only a dinner together but the experience of recognition for all of this good work.

We are all very proud to give back especially to our veterans in this small way for what they have given to us in a very large way. For making their individual sacrifices, but also by their families.

It would have been nice to win, but we didn’t this time and that’s okay. We will still do what we do for all the right reasons.

Thank you St. Louis and the EMMY Awards. We had a great time.

A Day With Ugo

30 07 2013

Hi friends,

If you like photography you may like this day I want to share with you.

Let me introduce you to my friend Ugo from Itily.

Ugo is a photographer and was visiting Boston. He had a few extra days and wanted to photograph the sea coast of Maine.

We had the opportunity to connect with Ugo where we spent all day together, Ugo, my wife and I.

We met up at a predetermend location, right off Interstate highway 95. We shook hands said our hellos and came up with a plan for the day, that by the way had some twists and turnes.

Ugo followed us to Kennybunkport in his rented car. It was one of his researched destinations.

We left his car in parking lot then we rode together all day. But before we got started it was low tide, and a view just off to the side of where we left his car.

This was our first photo opportunity.
We took lots of photos, and its also where I was able to capture Ugo at work.

We took a walk through the town of Kenneybunport captured photos where ever we looked.

Kennybunkport is a town in York County, Maine, United States.

The town center, the area in and around Dock Square, is located along the Kennebunk River, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) from the mouth of the river on the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, a shipbuilding and fishing village, for well over a century the town has been a popular summer colony and seaside tourist destination. Kennebunkport has a reputation as a summer haven for the upper class and is one of the wealthiest communities in the state of Maine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennebunkport,_Maine

After a short while it was getting close to lunch time, and what else would one eat when in maine? Correct, Lobster! We at the Clam Shack just over the bridge in Kenneybunkport. In the summer of 2010, the Shack faced off in a heated contest over the best lobster roll in Kennebunkport for the Travel Channel’s “Food Wars” program. Their famous lobster roll won! The Clam Shack has also been featured in a many magazines and on Television. You can see more about them on their web site http://www.theclamshack.net/ .

We then got back in my car and drove up Atlantic Coast stopping from time to time when we came accross an interesting spot.

We found a small fishing port where we saw and spoke with one of the local lobstermen bringing in his catch for the day. He even held up one of the lobsters for us from his catch.

From there we stopped of at thunder hole. A spot where the tide bangs into the rocks making a thoundrous sound and shoots a spray of sea water into the air.

Just across the way from Thunder hole is President Bush’s summer home. What a view.

Just a bit further up the road and on the west facing side of the street the was an interesting water way with tall grass and plant life. An other photo op.

Even got an other picture of Ugo shooting nature through the weeds.

We got back into the car and headed another 30 minutes north to The Pier at Old Orchard Beach. The beach was full as the tide was craching a shore. We even took a stroll down the bordwalk along with all the other visitors to the beach.

Next stop, Portland Head Light. We drove a bit more north to get to this destination, But what a view. We were able to shoot from both sides of the lighthouse.
From the hight points the tourest photo spots as well as from the rocky beach. You had to climb the rocks to get there. But so worth it.

A friend once told me if your not in the shot you were never there.

A bit of trivia. George Washington commissioned this lighthouse in 1790.

Also, Henery Wadsworth Longfellow often walked from Portland to visit this lighthouse where it’s believed he was inspired for his poem “The Lighthouse”.

We had to have a little fun as we stood in the doorway of the whistle house.

It has been a full day already, but we were not done yet.

We drove back to Kenneybunkport to get Ugo rental car.

He followed us back to Ogunquit Maine where he was to spend the night. We checked him into the hotel and left our cars one more time. We took the short walk into Perkins Cove where we were able to capture a few more photographs as the sun was setting on an overcast cloudy night. However, there was a few breaks in the clouds where we had a red sky for a few moments and some reflestions on the water.

From here it was a long day and we needed some food. We stopped into one of the resterants in Perkins Cove where friends shared a seafood meal and a bottle of wine.

We walked Ugo back to his hotel. Said our good nights. It was hard to leave such a good friend after such an amazing day. We hope there will be other opportunities to connect again very soon.

In the morning before Ugo was to fly home he wanted to try to capture an other light house at sunrise.

He told me that he had an early wake up call set for 4:15AM to drive to Cape Neddick, ME, to shoot Nubble Light at sunrise. Unfortunately, the sky was overcast, but after a while it started clearing a bit in the East, raising hopes of getting an amazing sunrise.

Suddenly, beams of sunlight peeked out from under the clouds. They lasted for about 30 seconds, then the clouds closed for good and the sun was gone for the rest of the day.

Luckily, he was ready to press the shutter at the right moment.

Happy Ugo got his shot.

Sand and Water – National Sand Sculpting Festival with Bruce Garber

21 07 2013

National Sand Sculpting Festival
Revere Beach, July 19 – 21, 2013

Revere Beach is located six miles north of downtown Boston.

In 2004, the first New England Sand Sculpting Festival was held. The annual contest soon offered cash prizes, which attracted famous sculptors from all over the world. This year’s tournament is taking place from Friday July 19th to Sunday July 21st 2013, near the bandstand on Revere Beach Boulevard.

The artists adhere to strict rules during the contest. Each sculptor is given 10 tons of sand and are assigned an 18′ x 18′ square exhibit area. Work by the artists is limited to 24 hours in total length, which is spread out over several days. Forms for molding components are allowed and must be removed prior to the artworks being rated by the judges. The sand sculptures are evaluated using four categories: (1) degree of difficulty, (2) originality and creativity, (3) quality of sculpting, and (4) overall visual impact. Thousands of dollars in prize money are offered each year, which garners some of the best artists in the nation to the festival. The New England Sand Sculpting event draws a lot of people to Revere Beach, and has increased the appeal of visiting this local attraction.

sub-notes:
The live streamed video broadcast was not the best video quality do to signal strength and bandwidth from this location however, it’s a great example of the work we’re doing to “walk the walk for those who can’t” via http://virtualphotowalks.org . We take people with disabilities to different locations around the world with the help from our generous photographer friends and enabled smartphones. Today it was my pleasure to take a few friends to the beach to see these wonderful sand sculptures.
